The cluster of genetic diseases associated with red blood cell disorders is called sickle cell disease. Sickle cell anemia is caused due to an abnormal amount of hemoglobin-S or sickle cell hemoglobin. This is a major issue in countries like India and in many parts of Africa and Asia. Sickle cell anemia is the result of hemoglobin mutation in order to protect the red blood cells from the parasites of malaria. This mutation makes the RBC rigid. Therefore, this disease can be seen in people with a specific ethnicity or in those who come from the malaria-prone area.

The shape of RBC turns like a sickle and stick to microvessels and helps through the infarction process. From the perspective of Ayurveda, this disease has the symptoms of Pandu roga as per the mentions of the classics of Ayurveda. Moreover, Ayurveda suggests its cause to be the beejadosha that means issues in the sperm or ovum. Beejdoshas generally results in the impairment of blood channels. As far as the treatment of sickle cell anemia in Ayurveda is concerned, herbs are used to make the count of blood cells and platelet normal and alter all the loss.
